Many students apply to the College of Charleston based on our location, size, reputation, beautiful campus, and nice climate. While these are all important considerations in choosing a college, why is the College of Charleston a particularly good match for you? (400 words)
While Charleston’s beauty is undeniable, my interest in the College of Charleston goes far beyond its picturesque scenery. For me, the city is not just a backdrop; it is a living laboratory. My passion lies in understanding how the stories of the past are embedded in the buildings and streets we walk every day. I have spent countless hours volunteering with my local historical society, not just archiving documents, but learning how a single building can tell a story of prosperity, struggle, and change.
This is why the College of Charleston is my top choice. It is one of the few places where I can pursue a degree in Historic Preservation and Community Planning, a program that feels tailor-made for my interests. I am excited by the idea of learning about preservation not just from a textbook, but by studying the iconic architecture right in my backyard. The opportunity to learn from faculty who are actively working to preserve and plan for the future of such a historically significant city is unparalleled.
Furthermore, I am drawn to the work being done at the Center for the Study of Slavery in Charleston. I believe that to truly understand a place, you must engage with its complete and often difficult history. The Center’s commitment to examining this legacy is something I deeply respect and want to be a part of.
At the College of Charleston, my education would not be confined to a classroom. It would be an immersive experience where I could connect my academic pursuits directly with the community around me. That is why it is the perfect match for me.
It is true that the coastal location of the College of Charleston is a major draw, but for me, it is the academic opportunities that make it the perfect fit. My fascination with marine ecosystems began during a high school project where I studied the impact of local pollution on our town’s watershed. I learned that my passion wasn't just for the ocean itself, but for the science of protecting it.
The College of Charleston stands out because of its exceptional resources for a student like me. The Grice Marine Laboratory is a name I have seen cited in research papers, and the chance to conduct hands-on research there as an undergraduate is an incredible opportunity. I am particularly excited about the accelerated B.S. to M.S. in Marine Biology program, which offers a clear and challenging path for me to advance my studies and contribute to the field sooner. This shows me that the College is serious about fostering dedicated scientists.
Beyond the lab, I am drawn to the college’s interdisciplinary approach. I am interested in how scientific research can inform policy and create real-world change, and the Center for Sustainable Development seems like the perfect place to explore that connection. I want to be part of a community that is not only studying environmental challenges but is also actively working on solutions.
While others may see a beautiful beach, I see a world-class outdoor classroom, supported by the specific programs and faculty that will allow me to turn my passion into my profession.
All the best!
