The exam at a glance
Section I - Multiple Choice
50% of score
Discrete questions plus sets tied to experiments, models, and data. No penalty for wrong answers.
Section II - Free Response
50% of score
Two long FRQs followed by four short FRQs. Each answer is scored against a task-specific rubric.
Free-response breakdown
Six questions, scored on task-specific rubrics. The two long FRQs carry most of the section's points.
Interpreting & Evaluating Experimental Results with Graphing
Design or evaluate an experiment and construct a graph from the data provided.
Interpreting & Evaluating Experimental Results
Analyze an experiment, justify a claim, and predict outcomes under new conditions.
Scientific Investigation
Describe a method, identify a variable, and justify the experimental setup.
Conceptual Analysis
Explain a biological process or relationship using correct reasoning.
Analyze Model or Visual Representation
Read a diagram or model and explain what it shows about a biological system.
Analyze Data
Interpret a table or graph and draw a supported conclusion from the data.
A 3 means no college credit. A 5 locks it in.
Write one real AP Bio FRQ and see if you're on track.

Exam day essentials
Four-function or scientific calculator
Graphing calculators are permitted. The exam supplies a formula and equations sheet - don't memorize it.
3 hours total, with a short break
90 minutes for multiple choice, then 90 minutes for six free-response questions.
Paper-and-pencil exam
You write FRQs in a lined response booklet. Only work inside the booklet is scored.
Frequently Asked Questions
Two sections: 60 multiple-choice questions and 6 free-response questions, split 50/50 between objective and written scoring.
Start with the sections that carry the most weight or expose your biggest weakness, then practice under realistic timing.
Match your practice blocks to real section demands so your pacing, accuracy, and task recognition improve together.
